With the start of Spring a whole array of new fruits and veggies come into season. Winter vegies like brussel sprouts are on the way out for the year, with exciting spring vegies like asparagus, avocados, and fennel coming into fruition. Beautiful fruits like manadrins, oranges and grapefruits are still in season, with strawberries, melons and passionfruits making their appearance in the weeks to come so keep your eyes peeled in the Enliven Fitness fridge for them.

Learning to eat seasonally is a fantastic way to develop a deeper connection with your food and with nature as well. Unfortunately when you visit a typical supermarket you can buy almost any fruit or vegetable at any time of the year, as this food is shipped from thousands of kilometres around the world. Because of this constant and abundant availability fruit and vegetables in supermarkets, many of us have lost our connection with what food is in season at certain times of the year. Our body knows what food it wants when the weather changes, that's why we crave hearty warming foods like pumpkin, cabbage, and sweet potato in winter, and refreshing cooling foods like salads, cucumbers, and tomatoes in summer.

Eating seasonally is not only better for your health but for the planet as well. By eating both locally and seasonally we are supporting local farmers, as opposed to the polluting and fossil fuel guzzling mass transportation of food from around the world. And by choosing to support farmers who grow Organic and pesticide free food, we are making a stand not only for the health of our bodies, but for the health of the planet. A toxic food supply, leads to a toxic body and a toxic planet. 

 

What's in Season in Spring 

 

SEPTEMBER
 
Veg: Asparagus, Artichoke, beans, beetroot, broccoli, capsicum, cauliflower, carrot, celery, eggplant, fennel, kale, lettuce, onions, pumpkin, snow peas, silverbeet, spinach, tomato, zucchini
 
Fruit: Avocado, banana, grapefruit,  lemon, lime, mandarin, melons, orange, passionfruit, pawpaw, strawberries, tangelo
 
Herbs: Chillies, garlic, ginger, parsley
 

OCTOBER
 
Veg: Asian greens, asparagus, beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, cauliflower, cucumber, leek, lettuce, onions, pumpkin, rhubarb, spinach, tomato, zucchini
 
Fruit: Avocado, banana, grapefruit, mandarin, mango, papaya, passionfruit, pineapple, tangelo, watermelon
 
Herbs: Garlic, parsley
 
NOVEMBER
 
Veg: Broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, peas, radish, rhubarb, sweet corn, tomato
 
Fruit:  Avocado, banana, berries, cherries, grapefruit, lychee, mango, papaya, pineapple, oranges
 
Herbs: Basil, chives, coriander, dill, mint, oregano
